Why Santa Cruz Homeowners Choose CWS Construction
We provide independent CWS repair in Santa Cruz, from refacing a sink run in a 1940s Lower Westside bungalow to building out full kitchens in Scotts Valley. Our crews work with CWS Heritage, Summit, and Frameless Full-Overlay lines weekly, so we know the specific ways these boxes wear in coastal conditions. We are not a CWS dealer or factory rep. We are a licensed general contractor, which means we can honestly tell you when a CWS box is worth saving, when it should be refaced, and when the numbers favor replacing the run entirely.
Call (877) 265-5771 if you have a CWS cabinet that is failing, a kitchen that needs new CWS fronts, or a remodel in the planning stages.
Why Trust Spruce Contractors for Your CWS Construction?
Nate Calloway has been running projects across the Bay Area since his College of San Mateo construction technology days, and he built Spruce Contractors around a simple idea: one contractor, every trade, with materials you can actually name. When it comes to CWS, that matters. CWS cabinetry is built on a 3/4-inch plywood box with full-overlay doors and a specific hardware ecosystem. Most general contractors will hang CWS cabinets like any other line. We do not. We know where these boxes flex, where the finish fails, and how to refit them without a factory rep.
We carry OEM-spec hinges and soft-close undermount glides that match CWS frame profiles and door weights. When the original glide on a 10-year-old Summit pot drawer is discontinued, we swap in a quality aftermarket soft-close unit rather than telling you to live with a drawer that slams. That is the difference between a contractor who hangs cabinets and one who actually services them. Good work doesn’t need a lot of explaining – you can see it.

Common CWS Construction Problems We Fix in Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz has a specific climate problem for cabinets: fog, salt air, wild humidity swings, and 70-year-old homes with slow plumbing leaks behind the sink. Here is what we see week after week on Twin Lakes CWS service calls and other coastal jobs:
- Thermofoil delamination on Summit doors. Summit-style full-overlay doors use thermofoil for a smooth painted look. In coastal humidity, the foil lifts at the edges, especially on the dishwasher and sink run. The steam and heat soften the adhesive films until you see raised ridges and peeling corners. The box is usually fine; the doors are not.
- MDF toe-kick and box swelling in beach-adjacent homes. Homes near Seabright, Twin Lakes, or the Lower Westside sit in marine air half the year. A slow supply line leak or dishwasher drip soaks into the MDF toe-kick and box bottoms, swelling them until doors rack and no longer sit flush. Once MDF swells, it does not shrink back.
- Drawer-glide sag on wide pot drawers. CWS wide pot drawers carry serious weight. Cast-iron cookware and stacks of glass lids eventually sag the factory glides, causing rub marks on the box side and drawers that close hard. The fix is usually new undermount soft-close glides, not new boxes.
- Painted Heritage doors checking at panel-and-rail joints. The Heritage line uses raised-panel maple or oak with painted or stained finishes. As interior humidity swings between foggy mornings and dry Santa Cruz afternoons, the wood moves. Painted panel-and-rail joints develop hairline cracks, or “checking,” at the seams where movement concentrates.
- Racking boxes after long-not-permitted post-Loma Prieta repairs. Santa Cruz has 1989 earthquake buildings with wall framing that shifted and got patched over decades ago. When CWS cabinets are mounted onto out-of-square studs, the boxes rack over time, doors gape at the corners, and hinge screws strip out. We level and shim before remounting, rather than hanging a new box onto a crooked wall.
CWS Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach
If the box is structurally sound, we do not replace it. That may sound obvious, but plenty of contractors quote full replacements because they do not want to source a matching CWS door profile or spec the right glide. We match CWS frame profiles and door styles with OEM-spec hinges and undermount glides when the original hardware is still available. When the original glide is discontinued, which happens on Summit runs that are 10 to 15 years old, we install a quality aftermarket soft-close glide that fits the same mounting footprint. The drawer feels better than it did new.
The honest call comes when more than a few boxes are swollen from water damage, or the finish is failing across a full run. Chasing piecemeal repairs on a kitchen where five boxes have MDF toe-kick damage and six doors have lifted thermofoil is a losing game. That is when we tell you to reface or replace. We would rather lose a small repair job than sell you one that will embarrass us in a year. Call (877) 265-5771 and we will give you a straight answer on which path fits your CWS run.
Our CWS Service Process – Step by Step
- 1
Diagnosis on site. We measure the boxes, check for square and level, inspect hinge plates and glide carriages, and identify which doors show thermofoil lift, finish checking, or racking. We look for signs of water damage behind the sink run and around the dishwasher opening.
- 2
Repair or reface plan. We price three paths: hardware-only repair (glides, hinges, alignment), selective door replacement with CWS-matched profiles, or full reface with new doors and veneer. You see the numbers before we touch a screw.
- 3
Execution with the right parts. We use OEM-spec hinges and door bumpers where we can, quality aftermarket soft-close glides where we must, and CWS-matched shaker or raised-panel fronts for replacement doors. Drawer boxes get re-squared and re-glued before new glides go on.
- 4
Load testing and alignment. Every drawer cycles closed under weight. Every door gap gets checked at the hinge side and strike side. We adjust until the run looks and feels like a single installed unit, not a patchwork.
- 5
Warranty on our workmanship. We stand behind the install and the repair. If a glide we installed fails, we replace it. If a door we hung racks, we re-hang it. The manufacturer’s coverage on any new CWS product remains with the product.

AfterCWS Products We Service & Install in Santa Cruz
We service and install the full CWS line that we see in Santa Cruz homes:
- CWS Heritage – raised-panel maple and oak, painted or stained. Common in 1990s and early 2000s kitchen remodels across Live Oak and the Eastside.
- CWS Summit – full-overlay shaker in thermofoil and painted finishes. The line we service most often, mostly for thermofoil lift and glide issues.
- CWS Frameless Full-Overlay – Euro-style with 3/4-inch plywood boxes. We install these in new full-kitchen builds and handle hardware upgrades on existing runs.
- CWS Designer Series – glazed and distressed finishes. Repairs on these require careful finish matching, which we do with a local finishing partner when needed.
We stock common CWS-compatible hinges, soft-close glides, drawer bumpers, and leveling feet locally, so most hardware repairs happen without waiting on a factory order.
We Also Service These Brands
Because we are a full-scope general contractor, not a CWS specialist shop, we also work across the broader cabinet and countertop landscape: KraftMaid, Cambria, Silestone, and Kohler all show up in our daily project mix. If your kitchen has a mix of CWS boxes and another manufacturer’s island or bar, one crew handles all of it under one contract.
FAQs – CWS Construction Service in Santa Cruz
Yes, in most cases. We match the exact profile, panel style, and finish of your existing CWS doors and have replacements made to that spec. The older and rarer the finish, the more likely we recommend refacing the full run so the new doors do not stand out against the old ones. Call (877) 265-5771 and we can tell you whether a match is realistic for your specific CWS line.
That is thermofoil delamination, and we see it all over Santa Cruz because coastal humidity and dishwasher steam cycle the adhesive films daily. The fix is to replace the affected doors with new CWS-matched fronts rather than re-gluing the foil. The boxes rarely need replacing when the delamination is limited to the sink and dishwasher run.
If the boxes are square, dry, and structurally sound, new quartz or granite goes straight onto the existing CWS boxes. We check the run with a level and look for water damage at the toe-kicks and sink base before any countertop templating. Swollen or racked boxes get repaired or replaced first, because the new stone will telegraph any unevenness immediately.
Almost always a repair. Hard-closing CWS drawers are usually sagged glides, worn slide carriages, or a racked box that pulled out of square. We replace the glides with soft-close undermounts and re-square the box before remounting. A full drawer-box replacement is only needed when the box itself has swollen from water.
Yes, that is the bulk of our Pasatiempo CWS service work. We run the entire kitchen as one contract: CWS cabinet installation, countertop templating and installation, backsplash tile, plumbing trim-out, and finish carpentry. You are not coordinating a cabinet installer and a tile setter and a countertop fabricator. One crew, one schedule, one punch list.
CWS work is priced per project, and the range depends on whether we are repairing hardware, refacing a run, or installing a full kitchen. Here are the market ranges we see for Mount Hermon CWS service and surrounding areas:
| Service | Typical Santa Cruz Range |
|---|---|
| Cabinet Installation | $4,000 – $13,000 |
| Countertop Installation | $2,000 – $6,500 |
| Backsplash Installation | $800 – $2,500 |
| Kitchen Remodel | $14,000 – $45,000 |
| Small Kitchen Remodel | $9,000 – $20,000 |
