KraftMaid Construction in Palo Alto, CA | Spruce Contractors
We’re an independent Palo Alto General Contractor serving KraftMaid customers, and the thing that sets our KraftMaid work apart here is that we plan every cabinet run around the city’s tree-protection and design-review requirements before we ever open a box. That means fewer second-round permit reviews, fewer surprises when the arborist report lands, and a kitchen that actually fits the way Palo Alto homes are built. If you’re planning KraftMaid work in 94303, 94304, 94306, or 94309, call (877) 265-5771 for a free estimate. We’re not a KraftMaid dealer and not authorized by the manufacturer, but we know their product better than most dealers do.
Why Palo Alto Residents Choose Us for KraftMaid Service
We’ve installed and retrofitted KraftMaid cabinetry across hundreds of Peninsula kitchens, so we know how the door styles, box construction, and finish systems actually behave inside Palo Alto’s Eichler and rancher stock. KraftMaid makes a genuinely good cabinet, but every cabinet line has weak points, and around here those weak points show up in specific, predictable ways. Nate Calloway, our owner, grew up in Hillsborough and spent years in the field across San Mateo County before running Spruce Contractors, so when he talks about how a painted maple door facing checks along a south-facing glass wall, he’s seen it happen on real jobs, not in a brochure. We’re an independent contractor. We’re not authorized, sponsored, or warranty-backed by KraftMaid, and we don’t pretend to be. We specify and hang their product on our own workmanship, our own licenses, and our own name.

Common KraftMaid Construction Problems We Solve in Palo Alto
- Door and drawer face warping or delamination. Palo Alto’s older Eichler homes, especially around Greer Park and Fairmeadow, run on low-slope roofs and original skylights that are decades past their service life. When interior humidity swings season to season, the laminate on a KraftMaid door can start to lift at the edges, and a painted maple face can check. We see it most often on runs that sit under or near a skylight well.
- Soft-close hinge and slide fatigue. A heavy island door or an overloaded pantry drawer gets slammed enough times and the stock KraftMaid hardware gives out before the cabinet box does. The hinges sag, the slides stick, and eventually the door won’t sit flush. We replace fatigued hardware with quality aftermarket soft-close slides and hinges only where the original part is the weak link, not the whole cabinet.
- Finish checking and yellowing on painted faces. Mid-century homes in Palo Alto were built with minimal overhang and a lot of south- and west-facing glass. That direct afternoon sun cooks the finish on painted maple and cherry doors over time, leaving hairline cracks in the paint and a yellow cast on light colors. It’s a cabinet problem, but it’s really a Palo Alto orientation problem.
- Box swelling and toe-kick rot. Eichler and rancher homes built on slab have no crawlspace, so a slow dishwasher or sink leak saturates the toe kick and swells the box from the bottom up before anyone notices water on the floor. By the time you see it, the carcass usually needs to come out.
- Header and framing conflicts from past remodels. We regularly find kitchen walls where a previous owner’s remodel cut through a structural header to squeeze in a cabinet run. That’s not a KraftMaid problem exactly, but it becomes one when new cabinets won’t sit square because the wall isn’t carrying load the way it should.
KraftMaid Service in Palo Alto: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Palo Alto’s tree-protection ordinance is the thing nobody warns you about until it’s already cost you a redesign. A single protected coast live oak in the rear yard can lock the foundation and setback plan before a kitchen wall moves an inch. On KraftMaid remodels here, we routinely size and re-plan cabinet runs around arborist root-zone limits rather than the other way around. The city requires root-zone fencing and an arborist report before any excavation, and the protected zone often extends farther than homeowners expect. On a recent Emerald Lake Hills KraftMaid service project, we pulled a failed 1960s kitchen, sistered framing where a past remodel had cut a header, reset the layout to clear a protected oak’s root zone, and hung new KraftMaid frameless cabinets with upgraded soft-close slides. The owner kept the original post-and-beam ceiling and passed the city’s green-building and design review without a second round. That’s exactly how we want every Palo Alto job to end: one design review, one permit, one pass.
KraftMaid Models & Products We Service in Palo Alto
We work across the full KraftMaid range, including the Vantage line, which is framed with an all-plywood box and remains the most common semi-custom line we see in Palo Alto ranchers and Eichlers. Waypoint, KraftMaid’s full-overlay framed line, shows up a lot in newer additions and rebuilds near Professorville and the Stanford foothills. The Aspire and Passport frameless series are what we recommend most often for mid-century kitchens, because the cleaner face profile suits the post-and-beam look without fighting it. For parts, we match OEM KraftMaid doors, hinges, slides, and touch-up finish when the existing box is sound. Our approach on any service call is to figure out what’s actually failed, not guess. See our KraftMaid sales & service page for more on the lines we carry and stock.

It’s the site conditions: arborist reports, structural fixes from past remodels, finish matching on sun-faded runs, and the permitting gauntlet that comes with any visible exterior change or square footage shift. A free estimate from us includes a straight line-item breakdown, and it’s a real number we stand behind, not a teaser. Call (877) 265-5771 to schedule one.

FAQs – KraftMaid Construction in Palo Alto
Yes, with a caveat. If the boxes are dry and square, we match OEM KraftMaid doors and finish touch-up to the existing run, but a badly sun-faded run will never match perfectly, no matter how good the paint match is. You’ll see the difference along the seam between old and new. In those cases we usually recommend refacing the full run so the transition disappears. Call (877) 265-5771 and we’ll tell you honestly which route makes sense after looking at the actual fade line.
We can keep the original footprint in most Palo Alto homes. Our Stanford KraftMaid service uses frameless Aspire and Passport lines that run shallower than framed cabinets and often let us add usable storage without touching a wall, which matters a lot when a tree-protection zone or a design-review condition limits your setback. Moving a wall always triggers more review, so we only propose it when the layout genuinely can’t work without it.
An interior cabinet swap on its own does not trigger design review. But if the work touches exterior doors, windows, skylights, or any addition, or if you’re moving plumbing or structural walls, you’re into the city’s green-building code and possibly discretionary review. We tell every Palo Alto client exactly where the line is on their specific project before we write the estimate, because guessing wrong costs weeks.
We fix the roof leak before we touch the cabinets, always. There’s no point hanging new KraftMaid boxes under a roof that’s still letting water in during a Peninsula winter. We coordinate the roofing repair, inspect for framing damage underneath, and only then install or reface the cabinets. For more on how we handle the rest of the property, see our Palo Alto service area page.
Refacing keeps the existing boxes and replaces doors, drawer fronts, and hardware, which costs about half to two-thirds of a full replacement and makes sense when the carcasses are dry, square, and not water-swollen. Replacement means pulling everything and starting clean, which is the right call when there’s toe-kick rot, box swelling, or a layout that doesn’t work. Call (877) 265-5771 and we’ll give you a straight answer on which one your kitchen actually needs.
