Unilock Construction in Tiburon, CA | Spruce Contractors
We install and repair Unilock paver driveways, patios, and retaining walls across Tiburon’s hillside and waterfront properties, and we also offer our Home Remodeling in Tiburon. We’re an independent landscape and hardscape contractor – not authorized, sponsored, or endorsed by Unilock – but we’ve built enough paver work on near-vertical lots to know that on this peninsula, the pavers are the easy part. Access, drainage, and slope engineering decide whether the job holds. Call (877) 265-5771 for a free estimate.
Why Tiburon Residents Choose Us for Unilock Service
Most hardscape contractors in Marin can lay pavers on a flat lot. Tiburon doesn’t have many flat lots. What we bring to a Unilock project here is the same thing we bring to a roof replacement or a hillside foundation retrofit: we read the slope first, the drainage second, and the pavers third. Nate Calloway, our owner at Spruce Contractors, grew up around Hillsborough’s hillside rebuilds and has been running projects in the Bay Area long enough to know which soil conditions will fight you and which materials hold up through wet winters. That’s the framing we use on every Unilock job – the paver pattern matters, but only if the base under it was engineered for Tiburon’s grades. Read more about our Unilock sales & service capabilities.
We specify genuine Unilock pavers, wall units, and edge restraints so color, dimension, and interlock match what’s already on your property. For geogrid, polymeric joint sand, and drainage fittings, we’ll use quality aftermarket options where they perform equal to or better than branded accessories. You shouldn’t be paying a brand premium for a perforated drain pipe.

Common Unilock Construction Problems We Solve in Tiburon
- Efflorescence blooming on Brussels Block and Beacon Hill pavers. That white chalky powder isn’t a paver defect – it’s minerals wicking up through saturated bedding sand. On downslope patios above Beach Road and throughout 94920, hillside runoff and bay moisture keep the base wet for months. We fix the drainage first, then treat or relay the surface.
- Paver settling and base failure on sloped driveways. Tiburon driveways terrace up and down steep grades. Without geogrid and proper sub-drainage, winter rain washes the fines out from under the bedding layer, and within two seasons the field starts to sag and ripple. We pull the failed section, recompact on engineered aggregate, and rebuild with geogrid so the slope stays put.
- Frost heave and joint sand loss on ridge-street patios. Salt air and the wet-dry cycling that comes with bay exposure open joints and loosen edge restraints faster in Tiburon than in inland Marin. Exposed patios on ridge streets take the worst of it. Polymeric joint sand helps, but only if the base drains.
- Retaining wall bulging or leaning on Thornbury and Optic systems. Walls built too tall for the slope without engineered geogrid and drilled-pier footings eventually lean, bulge, or shear. We see this on terraced lots above downtown frequently. Sometimes the top course can be relayed. Often the wall needs to come down to a properly drained, engineered base.
- Driveway replacement where the old base was never right. A surprising number of Tiburon driveways were originally installed as “temporary construction access” and never rebuilt to finished standard. When we replace a paver driveway, the first thing we assess is whether the base predates the current house.
Unilock Service in Tiburon: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Here’s the fact that shapes nearly every Unilock project on this peninsula: most Tiburon lots above downtown and along the ridge streets are too steep and narrow for a delivery truck to back into. Beach Road, the streets climbing above it, the dead-ends along the ridge – none of them give a 53-foot flatbed room to turn around, let alone drop pallets at the rear property line. Unilock paver and wall-block pallets routinely have to be craned or hoisted over the house and staged on a neighbor’s driveway or the street. That means the hardscape plan gets sequenced around access before a single base course goes down. You can’t lay a driveway from the top down if the material can’t reach the bottom. On a terraced lot off Beach Road, we rebuilt a failing Unilock Brussels Block patio where years of hillside runoff had washed out the bedding sand and heaved the edge restraints. No truck could reach the rear yard, so we craned pallets over the roof, cut in a perforated sub-drain tied to a downhill outlet, relaid the base on compacted aggregate with geogrid, and reinstated the Brussels Block with polymeric joint sand. That terrace now sheds winter runoff instead of trapping it. For the full picture of what we do locally, see our Tiburon service area page.
Unilock Models & Products We Service in Tiburon
We work with the Unilock lines most common on Tiburon properties. Brussels Block – the tumbled, dimensional paver with the cobbled, old-European look – shows up on a lot of waterfront and hillside patios. Beacon Hill Flagstone gives the irregular flagstone appearance without the maintenance of natural stone. For retaining walls, we install Thornbury wall block and Optic structural systems, both of which need to be specified correctly for Tiburon’s grades. We stock common joint sand, edge restraints, and drainage fittings locally, and we source pavers and wall units directly so color and dimension match your existing field. When a wall’s base or footings are failing, we’ll tell you honestly whether re-laying the top course will hold or whether the wall needs to come down to an engineered base. Good work doesn’t need a lot of explaining – you can see it.

AfterUnilock Service Pricing in Tiburon
Hardscape pricing on Tiburon’s slopes runs slightly higher than flat-lot work in Corte Madera or San Rafael, because access often means crane time, and drainage almost always requires more excavation than a standard paver install. Here’s what we quote against:
| Service | Price Range |
|---|---|
| Paver Driveway Installation | $7,000 – $18,000 |
| Paver Patio Installation | $3,500 – $11,000 |
| Driveway Replacement | $5,000 – $14,000 |
| Driveway Sealing | $250 – $700 |
Your free estimate includes an on-site look at access, drainage, and the existing base – because those three factors, more than the paver style, drive the final number in Tiburon. Call (877) 265-5771 to schedule yours.

FAQs – Unilock Construction in Tiburon
Yes, if the base is built for it. A Unilock paver driveway on a 15% or steeper grade needs geogrid reinforcement, a compacted aggregate base, and sub-surface drainage that directs runoff off the slope instead of through the bedding layer. Without those, the driveway will settle and creep within a few wet seasons. Call (877) 265-5771 for a site assessment – the estimate is free.
That white powder is efflorescence, and it means water is moving through your paver base. On Tiburon’s downslope lots above Beach Road, hillside runoff is the usual source. The shifting means the bedding sand is losing its fines. We fix both by installing a perforated sub-drain and relaying the base on compacted aggregate. Call (877) 265-5771 and we’ll take a look.
We crane or hoist them. On ridge streets and above downtown, including areas where Unilock in Chinatown projects have similar access challenges, pallets routinely go over the house and get staged on a neighbor’s driveway or the roadside. We sequence the whole job around access – material delivery, excavation, base prep, and install – before any work begins.
Only if it’s engineered. A Unilock Thornbury or Optic wall on a steep grade needs geogrid, a drained base, and often drilled-pier footings. Walls built without those will eventually lean or bulge. We’ll tell you honestly whether a repair will hold or whether the wall needs to come down and be rebuilt.
The pavers themselves hold up well – Unilock’s concrete units are dense and durable. What salt air and bay moisture attack is the joint sand, the edge restraints, and any steel in the base. We specify polymeric joint sand and corrosion-resistant restraints for exposed Tiburon sites, which extends the surface life meaningfully. Call (877) 265-5771 for an exact quote – estimates are free.
